He was my childhood crush. Best friend to my step-brother. I used to watch him as they worked on their derby cars in the yard and as they did work-outs in our home gym. Little did I know he was watching me too. But there was always a rule between the boys- he was not to lay eyes on the little sister of his best friend.
Fast forward to years later. I had a child with another man at this point but things were not going so great. We split amicably and not long after I crossed paths with my childhood crush, Phil.
And from there we began a life together. We went through all sorts of ups and downs and even brought a beautiful little girl into the world together, but we always stuck it through. It took 4 years just to pay off my engagement ring and our wedding plans changed about 3 times until the day I thought I had found the dress of my dreams. And so we finally decided to pick a date, August 18 2018.
It was time to get the planning show on the road. Most important and top of my list, after the dress of course, was photography. We took the time to choose our photographer. We wanted someone who could really capture our special day and someone we felt comfortable with. We had a video chat with Samantha Roy and instantly felt a connection to her and so we booked her as soon as possible. We spent an entire year refurbishing vintage/antique chairs for our ceremony. We also build 3 benches from old wooden bed frames, all for seating for our guests. We then built the arch to which we married under on our homemade beach on the side of the Ottawa River. We also build some very large marquee LOVE letters with lights to add to our decor. We rented a tent in case of rain in which we set up a very large handmade Donut wall with handmade paper flowers all built by myself and my now husband.
We also refurbished an old desk for our signing table, made hand painted signs for parking, washrooms, s’mores, bonfire etc. Everything decoration wise for our wedding was all hand made or refurbished by us. The biggest accomplishment would be the very large pond we built all from scrap and extra materials laying around complete with a waterfall just for that special added touch to our Wedding. We also had a magician Kevin Smith, during our cocktail hour to entertain our guests.
All the hard work and effort and team work really made us realize why we belong together. We can do anything we set our minds to, I’m the brains and he’s the muscle. Together we can do anything.
We had a very non traditional wedding. Our ceremony took place at 7:00 pm. Only keeping the tradition of not seeing each other the day before the wedding. We didn’t see each other until I walked down that isle.
We married on our beach with about 60 of our closest family and friends. We had a huge bonfire, an all you can eat poutine truck from La Fomagerie in Grenville, Que. and to finish off the night we had the most amazing display of fireworks set up by the best man and brides man.
