Robert and I actually met at work! He was working for one of our facilities in Georgia and took a job at our corporate office in Grand Rapids, MI where I was working in the marketing department. In the lumber industry, we’re use to working with people twice our age – so he had asked if there was anyone young in the office who could help him out with navigating the city, tips on finding a place to live etc. So I did what I would want someone to do if I moved to a new city and helped as much as possible.
Fast forward a short three weeks and he wasn’t planning to go home for Christmas and would be alone in Grand Rapids. So I asked if he would like to spend Christmas with my family…and we’ve been together ever since! I remember feeling different about him. I knew right away and actually told my girlfriends that Christmas, “This is crazy, but I’m in love with my co-worker.”
Over the years, I turned this sweet Georgia peach into a Michigander. We took advantage of the outdoors in every season and he came to love this place as much as I do.
On a beautiful June weekend we went camping at the Leelanau State Park. That Friday night, he asked me to spend the rest of our lives together – watching the sunset over Lake Michigan. We kept this moment to ourselves the entire weekend and enjoyed romping around in wine country – two newly engaged loves.
When it came to wedding planning, we knew we wanted our friends and family to enjoy northern Michigan as much as we do. So we knew immediately it would be “up north” and outside. Brengman Brothers Vineyard had always been a favorite of ours and after speaking with Lauren, the venue manager, we knew it was a natural fit!
Through all the twists and turns of 2020 and COVID-19, we knew we wanted to stay true to ourselves – whether we could have 100 people or 10. With some patience and a lot of hope, we were able to have the wedding of our dreams on 9/6/20 in northern Michigan surrounded by loved ones and supported by those from afar. We’re so fortunate to be able to start this next chapter of our lives together this year and can’t wait for the journey ahead.
