Brett and I met at my sister's wedding. He was a groomsman, and I was a bridesmaid. From the first time I saw him, I knew there was something special about him, so when my siblings arranged a date for us, I was quick to say yes!
We started dating in September of 2021, and got engaged the following year.
In October, my mom and sisters accompanied me in searching for the perfect dress. My older sister took this one off the rack, and upon trying it on, we had tears in our eyes. I tried on other dresses, but nothing else compared. Simple and elegant - this dress was perfect for me!
When I brought the dress home, I made a point not to try it on in front of my dad - I was going to keep it a surprise!
As our big day approached, and the months turned into mere weeks, we encountered a hurdle we never saw coming.
My dad became very ill. Helplessly we watched as his condition worsened.
Just two weeks before our wedding day, he was admitted into the ICU - fighting a mystery disease. My mom stayed by his side the whole time (like in their vows -in health and sickness). Everyone else, however, could not visit or communicate with him. All we could do was wait and pray and think. Think. Would my dad ever see me in my wedding dress? Would he make it to walk me down the aisle?
Exactly one week before our wedding day, doctors began treatment for a rare, life threatening blood disorder called TTP. We were able to visit him in the ICU just 2 days later. He was not the same dad I knew just weeks before; I had never seen him like this. So weak and confused.
When my sister broke the news to him that our wedding was that week, he was devastated. We all cried together in that hospital room. I told him, "Dad, you might not make it to our wedding, but as long as you are okay, that is all that matters."
If you know anything about my dad, you would know that he would do anything for his kids. He was determined to walk his daughter down the aisle.
On March 31, 2023, my dad beats the odds and saw me in my wedding dress. With some assistance from my wonderful mom, he also walked me down the aisle.
In the end we learned that all the little things involved in planning a wedding weren't worth the stress. The important part was having the ones we loved by our side.
