Some love stories happen quickly. Ours took a little longer. My husband Sean and I met later in life, after both of us had experienced enough of online dating to know exactly what we were looking for. When he proposed during a snowstorm at the same Tiki bar where we had our first date, it felt as though every twist and turn had led us to that moment. After waiting so long to find one another, we knew we had finally found our penguin. We were married on April 18, 2026, in Ottawa, Canada, surrounded by family and friends who had supported our journey. As a Mexican-Canadian bride marrying a Scottish-Canadian groom, we wanted our wedding to feel like a celebration of both our cultures. Throughout the planning process, our running joke became, “María is becoming Scottish and Sean is becoming Latino.” Our wedding theme was inspired by the idea that dreams really do come true. We blended Scottish and Mexican influences throughout the day, from tartan details worn by Sean to colourful Talavera bud vases from my hometown of Puebla, Mexico. I also wore my mother’s emerald earrings, carrying a small piece of my family with me as I walked down the aisle. We included subtle nods to our beloved penguins, a symbol of loyalty and lifelong partnership that had become part of our love story. Every detail was chosen to create a wedding that felt uniquely ours—warm, joyful, and deeply personal. Finding my dress was one of the most joyful parts of the entire planning process. Like many brides, I had spent years imagining what I would wear on my wedding day. Yet when I saw Paloma Blanca Style 5075, I immediately felt what Lorelai Gilmore described when she found her wedding dress. What surprised me most was how easy the decision was. I purchased it without my mother, maid of honour, or family present, making it one of the few wedding decisions that was entirely my own. There was no dramatic debate, no endless search—just a quiet certainty that this was my dress. Luckily the sales consultant was able to capture the moment I tried it on and the beautiful reaction it generated in me. Throughout the months of planning, the gown became my happy place. Whenever budgets, timelines, logistics, or wedding stress threatened to overwhelm me, I would think about the dress and remember why we were doing all of this in the first place. On my wedding day, I felt beautiful, confident, and completely myself. The soft floral details, romantic neckline, and timeless silhouette felt perfectly suited to both the elegant church ceremony and the intimate celebration that followed. Looking back at our photographs, I still feel the same joy I felt the first time I put it on. More than a wedding gown, my Paloma Blanca dress became part of our love story—one I will treasure for the rest of my life.
